How This Story Began...
Something happened in early February that requires immediate scrutiny by Pennsylvania's Internet Community.

Governor Ridge released his budget plan in early February, and among the items he proposed was PA PowerPort, a Microsoft-partnered venture into creating the nation's first "statewide Internet portal". Among the items he proposed to provide would be a:

  • Pennsylvania search engine
  • Road maps
  • Weather
  • Individual e-mail accounts
  • Online yellow pages, local hometown news
  • Web site construction for business.

We've mentioned in our newsletter before that the state government is dabbling too much into commercial internet territory. However, this budget proposal is a jump into the lake of competition, and deserves full-scale public investigation and consideration of the idea.

For example, here's a list of questions, for starters, that are worthy of public discussion.
